WHY PROTESTANT ? (POR QUE PROTESTANTES ?)

The term Protestant, do not have their origin at the time of the Reformation held by Martin Luther.

The word "Protestant" have their origin in the fact that occurred in 1529, during the campaign of the Lutheran Reformation, the Spires Diet (Germany) decided that would not be religious changes in Germany until the meeting of a general council; therefore, Catholics and Lutherans would be in positions previously assumed. This decree caused the protest six princes and fourteen imperial cities on 19 April 1527. Hence the name "Protestant" that was given to them.

The noun "Protestant" only came into use in the eighteenth century, going to designate all Reformed Christians who oppose Rome. Now they prefer to be called "evangelical" as called themselves the Reformed of the sixteenth century; such title, however, is not unique to Protestantism, as Catholics also can call evangelicals, but also evangelicals can be called Catholic. POR QUE PROTESTANTES ?

O termo protestante, não tem sua orígem no ato da Reforma realizada por Martinho Lutero.

A palavra "protestantismo" tem sua orígem no fato que  se deu em 1529, durante a campanha da Reforma Luterana, a Dieta de Espira (Alemanha) resolveu que não se fariam mudanças religiosas na Alemanha até a reunião de um concílio geral; por conseguinte, católicos e luteranos ficariam nas posições até então assumidas.  Esse decreto provocou o protesto de seis príncipes e catorze cidades imperiais em 19 de abril de 1527.  Daí o nome de "protestantes" que lhes foi dado.

O substantivo "protestante" só entrou em uso no século XVIII, passando a designar todos os cristãos reformados que se opõem a Roma.  Atualmente preferem serem chamados de "evangélicos", como se autodenominavam os reformados do século XVI; tal título, porém, não é exclusivo do protestantismo, pois os católicos também se podem chamar evangélicos, como também, evangélicos podem ser chamados católicos.(1)
